LOS ANGELES – It’ll be a sweet summer this year for students and parents of Montebello Park Elementary School. That’s because after years of being on a year-round calendar, the 620-student campus just south of Montebello will switch to a traditional school schedule this fall, thanks to the recent addition of a two-story building with eight classrooms. Principal Margie Rodriguez said the school is operating four different tracks on a 45/15 schedule – 45 days of instruction followed by 15 days of vacation. At any given point in the year, one track was always on vacation. But the new classrooms, funded by bond monies, have now provided enough space for the campus to accommodate all of its students at one time, Rodriguez said. As for the current year, Rodriguez said the final year-round track will finish classes late June. That means all students will get at least two months of summer vacation. “I’m very glad it’s changing. We’ve been talking about it for years,” said parent Luz Gonzalez, 41. “On the year-round schedule, the kids would get so much vacation and they were constantly coming and going, coming and going. I didn’t think it was good for them.” Kindergarten registration at the school, which serves grades K-4, begins Monday and daily registration is available for all other students.
