BREA – A man suspected of robbing a sandwich shop in Brea was arrested, along with his getaway driver, who led police on a brief chase in a stolen vehicle, authorities said. About 4:50 p.m. Friday, Jose Luis Flores, 34, of Diamond Bar allegedly entered a Subway store at 403 W. Imperial Highway, ordered a sandwich, then demanded money when the clerk opened the register, Brea police said. Flores then fled on foot with about $50 before entering a Honda Accord driven by Jerry Edward Pasillas, 33, of Whittier, according to police. Another store employee spotted the men and followed their vehicle, alerting police, who located the two suspects and chased them before the two eventually surrendered, police said. Flores and Pasillas were booked on suspicion of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and auto theft, police said. Pasillas was being held in Orange County Jail on $50,000 bail. Flores is being held without bail due to an outstanding robbery warrant, police said. Children offered nature field trips SOUTH EL MONTE – Whittier Narrows Natural Area and Nature Center offers “Field Trips in Nature” to elementary school-age children from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children are given an overview of the ecosystem and shown various live animals that can be found in the park then taken on a walk/hike through the natural area of the park (wear appropriate shoes). La Habra donates items to military LA HABRA – The city has collected donated items to send to its adopted military unit, Charlie Company 426, currently stationed in Iraq. Gifts were collected at the city’s annual tree-lighting ceremony Dec. 3 at City Hall, 201 W. La Habra Blvd. A bin was also placed weekly in the lobby of City Hall. Vocalists through the age of 30 and string players through the age of 26 can apply before Jan. 12 to participate in the competition, which will distribute cash prizes of $1,500 to winners. Winners will also participate in the Rio Hondo Symphony orchestra’s “Festival Finale” concert May 7. The runner-up in each category will receive $500. The first 25 eligible musicians will be chosen.
