Bombs away! New diving board installed in Bundoran in time for summer

first_imgLocals in Bundoran were delighted last week to see the long-awaited return of their world-famous diving board, after an absence of two years.A popular attraction in the community, the summers of 2017 and 2018 were the first in many decades not to feature the squeals of excitement from children off the iconic Rougey diving board. The Rougey diving boards were a top attraction, and until the 1970s there were actually two boards, with the second board two metres higher than the current board. In 1959, a powerful storm swept one board away, quickly being replaced in time for the following summer.Last week, upcoming council candidate for Donegal, Diarmaid Doherty, and Shane Smyth, the local tourism officer, were informed that the board and new safety steps were ready and due to be delivered.Local election candidate Diarmaid Doherty (Left)Doherty said it is unfortunate that it has taken the council so long to replace the current board, given the efficiency and urgency of the repairs undertaken in 1959.He said that there was a worry that it would not be replaced in time for the current season, but himself and Shane Smyth, the local tourism officer, were regularly on the phone, checking for updates and demanding that the matter be given top priority.
