Confident Brathwaite aiming to become match-winner

first_imgDUBAI, UAE (CMC): All-rounder Carlos Brathwaite has his eyes fixed on being a match-winner for West Indies in the Twenty20 World Cup starting next week, and believes his skill set could be valuable in the team’s success. The 27-year-old has emerged as a strong attacking lower-order batsman and tidy seamer, and proved a revelation on the recent Test tour of Australia with a couple of half-centuries. Brathwaite said while his batting was currently ahead of his bowling, he was working hard to produce in both areas, to earn West Indies positive results in the March 8 to April 3 ICC event in India. “In T20, fortunately, I have the option of both [batting and bowling], but some days you go well with the ball … and some days it’s not so good with the ball, but then you have a chance to make up with the bat, so being an all-rounder is a plus,” Brathwaite said yesterday. “I’m striking the ball really nicely at the moment. My batting is probably just ahead of my bowling for the time being but hopefully, at least for one or two games in the World Cup, both of them come together nicely to win a game for West Indies.” TEST DEBUT On Test debut last December in Melbourne, Brathwaite struck an impressive 59 in the second Test batting at number eight, and then followed up with a whirlwind 69 off 66 balls in the final Test at Sydney. On the tour of Sri Lanka last October, the right-hander blasted 113 off 58 balls against the Sri Lanka President’s XI in a 50-over game. Brathwaite, a late call-up to the Windies T20 World Cup squad because of injury to Kieron Pollard, said he always backed his ability regardless of the result. “I’m pretty confident in my skills. I know once I go out there and execute the plans that I’ve set for myself and the targets that I’ve set, I’ll be successful,” he pointed out. While Brathwaite’s batting has been coming along well, he also remains a threat with the ball and picked up three wickets in the second unofficial warm-up T20 against Zimbabwe in Sharjah last Monday. He said one of his aims on the current tour was to lift his bowling. “I’m trying a few things in the nets. I’m trying to bowl a bit quicker. It’s been working thus far and long may it continue,” he explained. “The situation of the [Zimbabwe] game was more suited to my style of bowling – more containment rather than attacking – and I was just fortunate and lucky to get the three wickets which I was happy about.”last_img read more

Waste collector Ferry says he is broke and ‘intends to apply for social welfare’

first_imgFormer Donegal waste collector Jim Ferry has avoided jail again after appearing in the High Court and breaching court order.Mr Jim Ferry, who operated Ferry’s Refuse Collection and Ferrys Refuse Recycling up to 2016, was ordered to fully disclose his financial accounts to Donegal County Council during a High Court sitting on Tuesday. Mr Ferry avoided jail again when he was given until January 2019 to hand over all information requested by a forensic accountant of Donegal County Council.RTE News reports that senior counsel for Donegal County Council, Richard Lyons, applied to have Jim Ferry sent to prison for failing to fully cooperate with efforts to recoup money. The money is needed to fund the “environmental carnage” caused by Mr Ferry’s illegal dump at Rossbracken on the banks of Lough Swilly. An estimated 21,000 tonnes of rubbish is said to be buried at the site which is in a Special Area of Conservation.Donegal County Council faces a multi-million euro bill for the clean-up, which the tax payer will have to pay if Mr Ferry does not cooperate and give information to address outstanding issues with his accounts.Counsel for Mr Ferry, Francis Treanor, objected to the application to jail his client and said Mr Ferry was not trying to hide anything. The court heard Mr Ferry had more than €150,000 seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau, following raids on properties linked to him and his companies. The court also heard that Mr Ferry was broke and intended to apply for bankruptcy and social welfare.Mr Justice Barrett found Mr Ferry to be in contempt of court and put the case back to January, warning that Mr Ferry will be jailed if he does not provide the necessary information.Read the full report on RTE News: www.rte.ie/news/investigations-unit/2018/1002/1000498-waste-collector-spared-jailWaste collector Ferry says he is broke and ‘intends to apply for social welfare’ was last modified: October 6th, 2018 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Anthony Dupree said.A preliminary investigation concluded the father and son lived together at the condo, but detectives do not know what led to the shooting at the complex just north of the Scripps Ranch area and east of Interstate 15.The first officers to arrive at the scene found the 46-year-old victim lying on a bedroom floor suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, Dupree said. “Officers provided immediate medical aid to the victim, until relived by paramedics,” the lieutenant said. “Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.” The suspect, whose name was not released, had fled from the condo on foot before police arrived, but he was arrested about 1 a.m. about two miles from his family’s dwelling when someone called 911 after spotting the teen on Scripps Poway Parkway near the I-15, Dupree said. He was allegedly arrestedwith a handgun in his waistband and dozens of rounds of ammunition in his backpack.Footage from several news cameras at the scene showed officers taping brown paper bags around the suspect’s hands, presumably to preserve possible gunshot residue evidence. Cameras also captured officers collecting evidence on the hood of a patrol vehicle that included a black handgun, at least two ammunition clips and two boxes of bullets. After the suspect was booked into jail, he was taken to a hospital out of precaution after complaining of injuries, Dupree told City News Service. The lieutenant did not know what type of injuries the teen said he had.Contrary to some news reports, Dupree told City News Service that investigators have no evidence suggesting the teen was planning any other violence. “There was some speculation that the suspect was planning on shooting up a school or something,” Dupree said. “That obviously caused some trepidation for some people. We have absolutely no evidence that was the case.”Anyone with information about the slaying was urged to call the San Diego Police Department’s homicide unit at (619) 531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. Railway Budget to focus on raising investments Suresh Prabhu

first_imgRailway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Friday said the 2016-17 Railway Budget would focus on raising investments and improving facilities for the passengers, keeping in mind current and future needs.”The comfort of passengers is today’s requirement, but augmentation of facilities is the future need. Our effort will be to take forward these initiatives hand-in-hand,” Prabhu told Press Trust of India. The minister said the government would continue with the initiatives taken in the previous Budget for the development of Indian Railways. He added that the BJP government had “complied” with most of the measures it announced in FY16 Railway Budget.”I am very happy to say that in the last Budget we had promised many things for the people of India and most of the announcements have been fully complied with,” he told the news agency.Earlier this week, a Hindustan Times report had said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has decided to increase train passenger and freight fares in the wake of cash-strapped Indian Railways struggling to raise its revenue. The Railways will face an additional financial burden of Rs 32,000 crore in the next fiscal year as it has to implement the employee salary hikes recommended by the seventh pay panel, even as the department finds it difficult to reach annual revenue target. The Railways freight traffic stayed 7 percent below the target set for the April-December period in the current fiscal year. Passenger bookings were also 5 percent lower than projected.Last week, Prabhu had said the revenue of Indian Railways would increase by 50 percent over the next five years, as it is in the process of raising funds from foreign investors. The total income of the Indian Railways went up by 12.16 percent to Rs 1.58 lakh crore in the last fiscal year ending March 2015, compared to Rs 1.41 lakh crore in the previous year.[1 lakh = 100,000 | 1 crore = 10 million | 100 crore = 1 billion]last_img read more

Rigging in city polls justifies caretaker govt demand BNP

first_imgLogo of BNPThe opposition BNP has worked out ‘strategies’ to apply in Monday’s elections to three city corporations to ensure presence of its polling agents and encourage party supporters to cast their votes ‘braving all odds’.The BNP leaders, reports UNB, came up with the strategies following civic polls in Khulna and Gazipur where, the party allegedly, it lost to massive rigging. Some party senior leaders said they will in no way engage themselves in any violence in the polls as they have worked out plans to face any unwanted situation tactfully instead of applying force. If their plans do not work and the elections are not held in a free and fair manner, they said, it will only justify further their demand for holding the next general election under a non-party and neutral administration. As part of their strategies, party leaders said they have formed centre-based committees and appointed those as polling agents who are influential and active in their areas so that they can go to the polling stations.Besides, they said, a group of their party leaders and activists will take position near polling stations to prevent the ouster of their party’s polling agents and obstructing voters.Another group will visit the houses of party supporters to encourage female voters to go to voting centres. The BNP leaders said they have trained their polling agents and given them various directions about facing any unwarranted situation and check vote frauds. They also said the polling agents of their party backed-councillor candidates are also given direction to work for mayoral candidates, if necessary. When contacted, BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf said the government is ready to hold the elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal applying the Gazipur and Khulna-election model to ensure the victory of the ruling party candidates.”We’ll try to resist their evil designs with our strategies and together with people,” he added.BNP vice chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu said they have a plan to put up a peaceful resistance together with people against vote rigging and election irregularities. “We’ll apply some strategies, but we won’t be able to fight with law enforcers as they have arms.”He said if the elections are not held in a fair and credible manner, the true face of the current government and the EC will get exposed again before people just months before the national election.BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said though there is no ‘visible sign’ of fair voting in the three cities, BNP candidates and supporters will remain out there in the field till the last moment of the polling. He said they fear that the ruling party will try to influence the polls by using the law enforcers. “If it happens, the Election Commission will have to be accountable to people.”BNP joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said police and the EC are the main opponents of BNP, not of Awami League, in the three city polls. “Our main concern is what will be the role of police and the EC. We’ve enough strength to tackle our political opponents. But it’s difficult to fight law enforcers and state machinery.”He, however, said their party leaders and activists will be there in the field braving all the obstacles. “We’ve taken some strategies so that the three city polls are not held in Gazipur and Khulna style. If our plans work well, we’ll apply those in the general election.”last_img read more
