On the Blogs: Where Apple Energy Is Going Others Will Follow FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Tim Healy for Forbes.com:Apple has quietly dropped a bombshell in the energy industry, launching an entirely new subsidiary called Apple Energy that will manage the complexities of its renewable energy efforts. The only information available on Apple Energy is in the company’s filings with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, but what can be gleaned from that illustrates a foundational shift underway in the energy world.Essentially, Apple is seeking the ability to sell the renewable energy it generates to other businesses and consumers at retail prices. Without FERC’s approval, Apple will only be able to sell its energy to energy providers and utilities at wholesale prices. Apple Energy would more or less act as an energy provider itself, enabling the company to leverage its investments in renewable energy like wind and solar to generate new revenue from an entirely new market.Apple’s decision to go this route might be unique, but a close look at the path it took to get here reveals a broader shift in the way businesses think about energy. And whether you’re a bleeding-edge company with substantial financial resources like Apple, or a smaller-scale enterprise that’s just starting to dip your toes in the water, there are a few lessons to learn from Apple’s energy evolution.Apple was one of the early names to sign onto RE100, a group of the world’s biggest companies committed to 100% renewable power. In its 2016 Environmental Responsibility Report, Apple said it’s already well on its way, claiming 93% of its worldwide energy usage comes from renewables. Like most big companies that have made aggressive public commitments to renewables in the past decade, Apple has pursued these goals through a combination of strategies, including the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs).If a company is drawing any power from the grid, the original source of power is indistinguishable, a mix of coal, natural gas, nuclear, or renewable. By purchasing RECs, businesses essentially pay a premium to ensure that for every megawatt of energy they consume from the grid, the energy supplier is procuring at least the equivalent amount from renewable resources. While RECs have become an increasingly popular way for companies to hit their renewable targets, some have claimed businesses that use them are misleading consumers. Critics argue that a company cannot claim to be 100% renewable while relying entirely on grid power. But Apple critics—and critics of RECs at large—are missing a few key points: 1) RECs are more than an expensive way of buying positive PR—they play an important role in the economics of renewable energy development, which accelerates the integration of these resources into our nation’s resource mix; and 2) Apple’s claims are based on more than just purchasing RECs as financial instruments on the open market. Like other firms in the RE100, Apple has influenced the transformation of the electricity grid by agreeing to purchase renewable energy on a large scale.Full post: Why Apple Energy Is A Wake-Up Call For Businesses

(AP Photo/Elise Amendola, File)ATLANTA — The Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots are bringing two of the top scoring offenses in the NFL to the Super Bowl. The reason they’ve both played so well has a lot to do with the big guys playing up front.ADVERTISEMENT Los Angeles had the same offensive line starters for all 16 games and both playoff contests. Their consistency has been key to everything Rams coach Sean McVay does with a team that averaged 32.9 points per game, ranked second in the league.A line that has nobody who has ever played in a Super Bowl is being rewarded.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSUrgent reply from Philippine football chiefSPORTSWin or don’t eat: the Philippines’ poverty-driven, world-beating pool stars“Having that consistency is big in everything we do,” left tackle Andrew Whitworth said. “We know each other very well at this point, and that’s something that you can rely on when you’re in a tight game, when you need to execute at an important time in the game.”The line has been just as dependable for the Patriots. Grace Poe files bill to protect govt teachers from malicious accusations “The D-line is certainly a great strength of theirs. We’ll be challenged. All those guys will be challenged.”The 37-year-old Whitworth is the cornerstone of the Rams’ offensive turnaround, providing brilliant blocking and steady leadership ever since he left Cincinnati to join McVay on the West Coast two years ago. He has started every game except one in the past two seasons — and so have left guard Rodger Saffold, center John Sullivan and right tackle Rob Havenstein. The Rams’ continuity on the line is remarkable in the modern NFL. Their only change from 2017 to 2018 was made at right guard, where Austin Blythe replaced the suspended Jamon Brown for the first two games of this season and played so well he never relinquished the spot. The Rams’ offensive line is a reliable barometer for the success of their powerful offense. When the linemen are playing well, as they did through the first 10 weeks of the season, quarterback Jared Goff operates smoothly behind his protection and Todd Gurley finds gaping holes in their opponents’ defensive fronts. When the line struggles, as it appeared to do at Detroit and Chicago in December, the offense stalls. Goff was pressured 51 times in a four-game stretch late in the regular season after getting pressured just 78 times in the first 10 games, directly leading to the Rams’ losses to the Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles.“Everybody knows how much I love those guys,” Gurley said. “They’re responsible for everything. We’ve got the best line in the game, in my opinion, and they show it on the field every week.”New England lost two starters on its offensive line in the offseason when tackles Nate Solder and Cam Fleming left in free agency. But with Marcus Cannon and Trent Brown taking their spots, joining center David Andrews and guards Shaq Mason and Joe Thuney, Brady was sacked 21 times during the regular season, compared with 35 times last season.New England knows it will take a similar effort against a Rams’ defensive line that also features All-Pro Aaron Donald, Dante Fowler and Ndamukong Suh.Andrews said one of the things they are so good at is changing up things, with Suh sometimes playing nose guard, and lining up on the edge other times.“Obviously they’re both dynamic players,” Andrews said. “Aaron Donald is the best defensive football player in the league, there’s no doubt about that. So it’s going to be a big challenge. We’re going to have to do a lot of things well.” US judge bars Trump’s health insurance rule for immigrants Tiger Woods finds a consolation prize without contending at Torrey Private companies step in to help SEA Games hosting Tom Brady has not been sacked in either of New England’s two playoff wins, with defenses getting only three quarterback hits while chasing an offense that is part of a team averaging 27.3 points per game, ranked fourth in the NFL.It hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Patriots’ 41-year-old quarterback. In the days after their AFC championship game victory over Kansas City, Brady posted a picture on Instagram of his spotless jersey. He tagged each of his offensive linemen in the post, writing, “Not even 1 grass stain!”The last time Brady wasn’t sacked through two playoff games was the 2003 season, when he wasn’t sacked at all during the Patriots’ three wins, including their Super Bowl victory over Carolina.“I think they’ve performed incredible all year really,” Brady said. “We really haven’t had many sacks this year and I think they’ve done such a great job protecting, and the run game, I think that speaks for itself. That was just an incredible effort last week and we’re going to need it again because this group is obviously exceptional at (the defensive line).ADVERTISEMENT Oil plant explodes in Pampanga town ‘We are too hospitable,’ says Sotto amid SEA Games woes View comments
The University of Guelph is launching a sports business institute to study the multibillion-dollar world of athletics, from sponsorships to social media.Led by International Olympic Committee member Richard Pound, the International Institute for Sports Business and Leadership will aim to bring scholarly and commercial minds together, including grad students and an advisory board of industry leaders. The new centre for research and teaching lands in the middle of a North American industry that athletic department director Scott McRobertson says is on track to hit $80 billion annually by 2022.According to the North American Society for Sport Management, academic programs in that field now number 16 in Canada.Pound, a champion Canadian swimmer who served as founding president of the World Anti-Doping Agency, says the centre will help organizations looking to boost attendance, leverage e-sports and study links to health and wellness.Organizers expect institute members will produce peer-reviewed research and train industry up-and-comers, churning out data for use by sports groups. Widsten’s last day with the Charlie Lake Fire Department is August 2nd, four days before he starts with the County of Grande Prairie.Dahlen said that the PRRD is moving forward with reposting the position as soon as possible, with the possibility of bringing in an interim Fire Chief to lead the department until Widsten’s replacement is found.Widsten’s departure marks the fifth time that the Charlie Lake Fire Department’s Chief has resigned since the PRRD took over control of the department in 2012.Steve Munshaw, Stuart Larson, Terry Truchan, and Dan Ross all served as Fire Chief prior to Widsten stepping into the role. When asked about the rather high rate of turnover in the Fire Chief position, Dahlen said that he “can’t disagree with that.”“It’s a small fire department. So, unfortunately for the Peace River Regional District, I think it’s definitely being used as a stepping-stone for individuals to advance their careers,” said Dahlen about some of the reasons for the frequent vacancies in the Fire Chief position. “Lots of times, people come to the area with an opportunity to get some experience and some education and be able to advance their careers.” FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Just a few weeks after it had found a new Fire Chief, the Peace River Regional District is once again looking for someone to lead the Charlie Lake Fire Department.According to PRRD Deputy CAO Shawn Dahlen, Charlie Lake Fire Chief Dale Widsten has tendered his resignation after he was announced as the department’s new Chief on June 27th.Dahlen said that Widsten has accepted a position as the new District Fire Chief for the County of Grande Prairie, where he will oversee four fire halls located in Bezanson, LaGlace, Teepee Creek, and Sexsmith. When it comes to improving retention of employees with the department, Dahlen said the PRRD is looking at implementing policies and also examining facets of the department itself, including the facilities and operating environment.Dahlen said that Widsten is still continuing in his duties until his departure, including helping the department to host a Volunteer information session at the Fire Department, which is taking place this evening at the Charlie Lake Fire Hall.

The Lok Sabha approved a confidentiality clause giving protection to the identities of domestic taxpayers who will come forward to disclose their previously undisclosed income, according to reports. A four-month compliance window will be opened from June 1 to Sep. 30, 2016, to facilitate disclosures under the Income Tax Disclosure Scheme. The Lower house of parliament gave its assent to this and 55 other amendments in the Finance Bill 2016, reported Economic Times.Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced the window in his budget to help unaccounted wealth holders to pay up tax and avoid further penalties and punishment. He had noted that the proposed tax of 45 percent included 30 percent of actual tax and a nominal 7.5 percent of tax as surcharge and penalty each.”Chapter IX of the Finance Bill seeks to introduce the Income Declaration Scheme, 2016, which provides an opportunity to persons who have not paid full tax in the past to come forward and declare the undisclosed income and pay tax, surcharge and penalty, totalling in all to 45 percent of such undisclosed income so declared,” the Lok Sabha was apprised, reported ET.According to Business Standard, the amendment has formally accepted secrecy and delay in returns by the defaulting taxpayers, by importing relevant Sections 138 and 119 of the Income-tax Act to the Income Declaration Scheme, 2016.Section 138 also provides for such “classified material” not being produced or used in court except to institute or assist in the course of a prosecution for any offence committed in relation to tax.The compliance scheme stipulates declaration of undisclosed assets at the fair market value (FMV) as existing on the date of commencement of the scheme. FMV, accordingly, will be regarded as cost of acquisition of the asset for any future transactions.
