Bruges Bounces Out Panathinaikos

first_imgOnce again, Greek soccer power Panathinaikos has had a disastrous exit from European Champions League play, losing to Bruges, 3-0.The win for the Belgian team gave them a 4-2 aggregate total over the Greens, who won the first game, 2-1. European soccer groupings play only two games with the total goals and other tie-breakers determining the victor even if both teams each win a game instead of playing a third game.Playing not to lose instead of trying to win was the killer for the Greek team which was too cautious instead of attacking and putting away the Belgian club.Bruges scored in the 53d minute (soccer doesn’t give exact time goals are scored) and then got a second five minutes later from Spanish midfielder Victor Vazquez, whose free kick bounced off the head of Panathinaikos defender Jens Wemmer into the goal.Nikos Karelis almost got one back in the 62nd minute but hit the post and that was all she wrote for the Greek side. Eight minutes from the end Bruges’ Obbi Oulare put in the dagger.Panathinaikos will now enter the Aug. 7 draw for the losers Europa League playoffs in the hope it will be able to feature in the group stage of UEFA’s second-tier competition.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img
