Navy denies arresting Indians Video

The navy has denied reports of arresting a group of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters last night.The Indian media widely reported today that 13 Indian fishermen who were on 3 boats were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy last night (Aug 20). The media reports also said that the fishermen from Rameshwaram are being questioned at the Gulf Island naval base. However Navy spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya told the Colombo Gazette that he had checked with the navy in the north and found that no such arrest had been made. Times Now TV reported that the Sri Lankan Navy was now strictly enforcing a ban on Tamil Nadu fishermen from fishing near Katchatheevu, their traditional area of fishing.Katchatheevu is an islet ceded to Sri Lanka by India under an agreement in 1974. The Indian media also said that 8 fishermen from the coastal Vedaranyam village were injured when they were allegedly attacked by Sri Lankan naval personnel in mid-sea off Arukattuthurai in Tamil Nadu on Aug 19.Officials, quoting the fishermen who returned ashore, said that the Sri Lankan naval personnel surrounded their boats and ordered them to turn back.
